Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT)
Fairview Range is home to the very latest and best imaging technology used to detect serious medical conditions and health problems.  The Diagnostic Imaging Department at the Fairview Range Medical Center campus is staffed by highly trained technologists and expert physicians who have built one of the Midwest's premier imaging departments for early detection of diseases.

What is it?

Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) represents the most advanced imaging technology available to radiologists in the detection of a wide variety of disease and medical problems. The PET/CT scanner also lets physicians know if a biopsy is needed, and helps in direct biopsies and treatment plans so they are as efficient and effective as possible

Benefits

PET/CT scans may be used to diagnose the following medical conditions and diseases:

■ Lung cancer

■ Ovarian cancer

■ Breast cancer

■ Lymphomas

■ Head & neck tumors

■ Colorectal cancer

■ Melanoma

■ Brain tumors

■ Pancreatic cancer

■ Myocardial infarction

■ Coronary artery disease

■ Dementia

■ Epilepsy

Expectations

Your primary physician will refer you to the Diagnostic Imaging Department. You should allow approximately two hours for the entire procedure. Do not eat anything for four hours prior to your scan. You should drink two glasses of water two ours before your scan. You may take prescription medication the day of your exam.

Before the PET/CT scan, you will be injected with a small and harmless amount of radioactive glucose (sugar). You must wait approximately one hour after the injection for the scan to begin. You will then lie on a table that passes slowly through the scanner.

A radiologist will interpret the results of your scan and forward them to your doctor, who will inform you of the results. Pre-approval for PET/CT scan reimbursement is required from your insurance provider. Diagnostic Imaging will request pre-approval for you from your insurance provider.
