The Diagnostic Imaging Department at University Medical Center-Mesabi provides a number of diagnostic services. Included among them are:

The department is staffed by highly trained medical professionals 24 hours per day. There is a radiologist present Monday through Friday and on call nights, weekends and holidays.

MRI Scanner
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center at University Medical Center-Mesabi houses a uniquely designed, "patient-friendly" scanner. Patients, especially people prone to claustrophobia, will appreciate its extra-wide opening and shorter length. This permanent, state-of-the-art MRI, provides remarkably high quality, detailed images and fast scan times, while offering the latest in patient comfort.

Bone Densitometer
Bone density scanning is now available at University Medical Center-Mesabi. A safe, simple and painless test can determine the health of your bones and help your doctor assess your risk of osteoporosis. Bone density testing is one step you can take to assure your independence and quality of life. Osteoporosis is preventable and treatable. If you have questions or concerns, talk to your doctor about having a bone density scan at University Medical Center-Mesabi.

EEG-Electroencephalography
EEG is the scientific field devoted to the study and recording of the electrical activity of the brain. This activity reflects the functional state of the brain. The EEG is used in the diagnosis of a variety of neurological problems, from common headache and dizziness to seizure disorders, head trauma, strokes and degenerative diseases. The EEG may be ordered to look for organic causes of psychiatric symptoms and learning problems in children. The EEG can assist physicians in determining cerebral complications and diagnosis. EEG's at Fairview University Medical Center Mesabi are performed by a Registered EEG technologist, as an outreach program of Fairview University Medical Canter, EEG Lab in Minneapolis. All EEG's are sent by courier to Minneapolis for interpretation by electro encephalographers.

The lab is currently using State-of-the-art digital (computer) equipment.

ARRANGEMENTS OR SCHEDULING OF APPOINTMENTS
Your physician or in the event of an emergency the treating emergency physician will determine the necessary diagnositic tests you may need as part of your medical treatment. Arrangements for various tests will be scheduled through your physician and his/her assistant.
