OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
(OT) is a health profession providing services to people whose lives have been disrupted by injury or illness, development problems, or the aging process. When we're healthy, we take for granted that we can dress ourselves, feed ourselves, work or play. But after experiencing an injury or debilitating illness, these simple tasks can become a chore. The OT department is staffed by Registered Occupational Therapists who use selected educational, vocational, and rehabilitation modalities to help individuals reach the highest functional levels possible, become self reliant and build a balanced lifestyle of work and leisure. They will show you special equipment to use or how to modify your home to increase ease and safety and will help you improve your strength, movement and dexterity. An Occupational Therapist can help you regain independence to fulfill all your roles in life. OT may occur as an outpatient or as an inpatient at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi. In addition, the OT department is available to provide service to area nursing homes, industries, home care. If you think an occupational therapist could help you, ask your doctor for a referral. Patients are normally seen for appointments between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

CARDIAC REHABILITATION
Cardiac Rehab is recommended for those with cardiac history and those at high risk of cardiac disease. At the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi you will find personal programs designed to build and improve strength and endurance, heart monitoring and exercise equipment, and exercise sessions supervised by professionals trained in cardiac care. Our Cardiac Rehab is the best road to recovery and we can help you live a fuller life.

Cardiac Rehab (Phase II-outpatient) is ordered by a physician for patients similar to Phase I. Phase II is initiated soon after discharge from the hospital. Patients are seen three times a week for a maximum of twelve weeks. Patients are monitored on telemetry each session. Blood pressure, pulse, and EKG are monitored before, during, and after exercise. Individual exercise prescriptions are written and updated daily. We have treadmill bicycles, arm ergometer, and rowing machine. We can exercise up to a group of four each session. The goals of the program are to educate, improve functional capacity, reduce readmission return to previous activity in a more heart healthy way.

Cardiac Rehab (Phase III - outpatients) is a service provided for patients discharged from Phase II. This program allows patients to continue to exercise in the security of the hospital setting, receive weekly monitoring of blood pressure and to consult with a professional staff should you have any questions regarding your care.

Cardiopulmonary Rehab is also provided in conjunction with the Respiratory Therapy Department. Upon referral of the physician for patients with cardiac and pulmonary disease, patients are exercised while monitored on oximetry. The program is staffed by Registered Nurses with both BCLS and ACLS Certification. Office hours are usually 7:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. , however subject to patient volume.
