THE STORY OF SLEEP:
Why do you need sleep? Sleep is not merely a "break" time between busy routines. Sleep is essential to physical and emotional health.

Adequate sleep helps bodies recover from illness and injury an carries mental benefits as well. With enough sleep it's easier to concentrate, accomplish tasks and handle minor annoyances. Not enough sleep can impair ability in regard to memory, learning, logical reasoning and mathematical calculations.

Even occasional sleeping problems can make life feel more stressful or make us less productive at work. Insufficient sleep can strain relationships and can lead to dangerous fatigue-related accidents.

What are the biggest sleep stealers? Psychological factors, lifestyle stresses, shift work, environmental interference, physical factors, medications.

How much sleep is enough? Sleep needs vary. You probably aren't getting enough sleep if you:
  • Tend to get drowsy during dull or monotonous situations
  • Are unreasonably irritable with co-workers, family or friends
  • Have difficulty concentrating or remembering facts.

So what's the secret to good sleep? Your physician is your best source for advice if sleepingproblems persist for more than a week, or if your sleepiness interferes with how you feel or function during the day.

In many cases, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes that can help promote sleep. But lifestyle changes alone may not be enough. Your doctor may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medications that can offer short-term relief from lack of rest.

Or, your physician may recommend that you undergo diagnostic sleep testing. Evaluation for sleep problems is available at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi's Sleep Lab.

Are you getting enough sleep? Close to one-third if all adults have occasional or frequent complaints about sleep. The quality of our sleep has a direct impact on the quality of our life. Few people, however, recognize the importance of adequate rest, or are aware that effective methods of preventing and managing insomnia now exist.

If you agree with any of the following statements, you may want to discuss your sleep patterns with your physician. You could have a "sleep debt" that is affecting you in ways you don't even realize.
  1. Falling asleep is hard for me.
  2. I have too much on my mind to go to sleep.
  3. When I wake up during the night, I can't go back to sleep.
  4. I can't relax because I have too many worries.
  5. Even when I sleep at night, I still feel tired in the morning.
  6. Sometimes I am afraid to close my eyes and go to sleep.
  7. I wake up too early.
  8. It takes me more than 30 minutes to fall asleep.
  9. I feel irritable when I can't sleep.
  10. I feel that I am dreaming all night long.
