The Prenatal Parenting Program is sponsored by Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi, Fairview Mesaba Clinic-Hibbing and Essentia Clinic-Hibbing in cooperation with: St. Louis County Public Health & Early Childhood Family Education.

First Steps to Parenting Class
This prenatal parenting class is a two-session class wich is held on two consecutive Tuesdays. Plan to attend around the 5th month of pregnancy. The topics will adjust to the needs of participants. During the sessions you will:
 

  • Learn practical information on parenting the newborn: car seats, safety, soothing a crying baby, pacifiers, bathing and infant massage
  • Learn about nutrition - what you eat is important
  • Making important decisions: breast-feeding, choosing child care, and parenting advice
  • Hear about and watch a demonstration of the newborn abilities
  • Hear ideas on how to care for yourself as a parent. (more information)

Expectant Parent Classes
This parenting class series is a four-session class held on four consecutive Tuesdays. It is designed for first time parents and coaches. If possible, plan to attend after you have taken the First Steps to Parenting Class. Lectures, handouts and videos cover topcs such as:
 

  • The physical and emotional changes of pregnancy
  • What to expect during labor and delivery
  • Comfort measures including breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Cesarean delivery
  • Breast feeding/bottle feeding
  • Newborn babies
  • Tours of Fairview's Women's Health and Birth Center are included (more information) Teen prenatal classes are available on an as-needed basis.

Refresher Prenatal Class
Information covered in this session includes what to expect during labor & delivery, comfort measures for labor and tours of Fairview's Women's Health and Birth Center are included.
Parents unable to attend the Refresher Prenatal Class, but who would like to review what to expect during labor and delivery, may obtain just the educational materials for a fee of $5.00. (more information)

Moms on Bedrest
Provided on an as needed basis for the expectant mother who is on bed rest and is unable to attend hospital based prenatal classes.

Babysitter's Training
Fairview Community Health is offering the American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course designed for youth between the ages of 11 to 15 that want information and the skills to provide safe and responsible care for children. Registrants completing the course will receive an American Red Cross Certificate in Babysitter's Training. Class topics include safety, basic childcare, safe play, first aid, and emergency skills.

Two separate two-day courses are offered (participants must attend both days of the course)
